LIMITED MEET ENTRIES
Every year parents have questions about why their children are entered or not entered in certain events at our dual meets. Coach Annie has this to share:
“Our league has rules about the number of entries per swimmer and number of heats per event in order to keep the meets from running too long. For a typical dual meet, we are allowed unlimited entries for 10 & under freestyle, 6 entries for backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and 11 & up freestyle; and 3 entries for the IM and distance freestyle events for each gender and age group. Additionally, we are allowed 3 relays for each gender and age group for both the medley and freestyle relays.
For this reason, some swimmers will swim fewer events per meet, particularly in age groups where there are high numbers of swimmers. I also prioritize entering swimmers in events I believe they will swim without getting disqualified. As swimmers improve their strokes over the season, they will have more opportunities to swim.
GFSL allows swimmers to “swim up” in other age groups where there are openings in individual events or to fill out a relay. There will be times when I give swimmers the opportunity to compete in more events by swimming them up in a different age group. I understand that your child may feel anxious about swimming up, but I hope that you will encourage them to embrace the opportunity to swim.”
Look for an email with detailed meet information on Monday!
